Butt Chisel – Set of 5
Made in Germany, these butt chisels are superbly balanced with the centre of gravity at the point where the blade enters the handle. Featuring a shorter blade and handle length than conventional chisels, these butt chisels are favoured for their ease of control and blade strength. They are used, as their name suggests, for cutting out recesses when installing butt hinges and for fine detail chiselling when cutting dovetails & cleaning delicate joints.
The blades on these bevel edge butt chisels are made from a premium quality chrome vanadium tool steel, which has high resistance to metal fatigue, to withstand the use of a mallet. Each blade is hardened to Rc61 along its entire length, resulting in a blade that will hold and retain a sharp, fine edge, over the life of the tool, without becoming brittle when sharpened. The blades are finely polished to achieve a mirror finish to minimise friction when cutting dovetails and cleaning delicate joints. The side bevels are finely ground to a narrow, tapered land for cleaning into angled corners and tight recesses. The blade and tang are forged from one piece of steel, which is seated deeply into the chisel handle for strength and durability.
The handles are turned from solid ash, selected for its straight grain and strength, and have an oiled finish for a good grip. Two steel hoops prevent the handle splitting or spreading when struck with a mallet. This 5 piece set is beautifully presented in a fitted, solid beech box and comprises of 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 26mm and 30mm butt chisels, with each chisel having its own location to prevent movement of the chisels. The chisels have an overall length of 210mm with a blade length of 100mm. ©
